Billionaire Mukesh Ambani will re-enter the telecom business in a big way towards end of 2015 by commercially starting its 4G telecommunication services in India. A price war is sure to ensue as the new venture attempts to aggressively build a customer base in the country, the world’s second-largest mobile services market after China.

Ambani in a letter to his shareholders in the company’s 2014-15 annual report said "Reliance has spent around $13 billion so far and will roll out physical infrastructure in 880 cities and towns countrywide". At the annual shareholders’ meet, Ambani said Reliance Jio is among the largest ‘transformational greenfield telecom initiatives’ anywhere in the world.

It will play a key role in catapulting India into the Top 10 countries in the world from its current 142nd rank in internet penetration, he said. According to AGM notes, Jio’s network is currently present in 29 states of India and also covers 18,000 towns and cities across the nation. The company aims to cover 80% of India’s population by the year-end and plans to have complete national coverage within the next 3 years. The company has so far, deployed 250,000 km of fibre throughout the country and will plans to deploy twice this length over the next 3 years.

Reliance Jio will also push to get cheaper devices into the market. It is expected 4G LTE smartphones priced below 4,000 rupees ($63) would be available in the Indian market by December.

Reliance Jio recently has also joined hands with Bharti Airtel in a infrastructure sharing arrangement. Under this new mega-deal, Reliance Jio can now access Bharti’s nationwide tower and network and optic fibre network by paying a service fee.

Bharti has 85,000 towers spread all over India; along with 1.74 lakh kms optic fibre network inside India and a global network of optical fiber of 2.25 lakh kms length which covers 50 countries and 5 continents.
